Director-General meets with President of the House of Representatives

yprus to ratify Council of Europe Convention on the Protection of Children against Sexual Exploitation and Sexual Abuse.  (The Lanzarote Convention)

 

 “Hope for Children” UNCRC Policy Center conducted a meeting with the President of the House of Representatives, Mr. Yiannakis Omirou, on the 23rd of November 2011. The necessity of the ratification of the Convention was explained to the President by the Director –General of HFC Mr. Joseph Varughese, while Mr. Omirou showed a great interest and positive attitude towards this issue. Specifically, he said: “My parliament is willing to ratify the Convention as soon as the administrative process is over”.

 

This progress can be considered as one of the positive results of the implementation of the “One in Five” campaign in Cyprus. Mr. Joseph Varghese Emphasized that  “Nevertheless, we have to keep in mind that not merely the prohibition and the punishment is the only way to stop sexual violence against children: we have to emphasize on the prevention as well.”
